- Our typical audience member, is a boy or a girl, as both gender's do watch horror films. We do not feel it would be right to say our horror film is aimed at just boys or just girls, because that would be using a stereotypical view which is non existent now as horror films appeal to both sexes. Due to our film being aimed at girls and boys, we have two typical different audience members, which is a boy and a girl. Our typical age group for our film is 15-24, as when we were looking at audience research on Pearl & Dean, the most popular age range for watching a horror film was 15-24, as it had the highest number of people watching a film. It also told us that on average, the same amount of females and males watch a horror film. Horror films are stereotypically watched by young couples, more so than romantic comedies, so the characters in horror films tend to reflect this. Both young males and females tend to appear in horror films. The reason I think horror films appeal to this target audience is because when home alone, you feel vulnerable, and by for example in our film, showing two girls at home alone being targeted by a killer, it plays on fears that the audience member already has, and makes them able to relate to the characters in this film as the actions the characters are committing are similar to how any teenager would react.
- For the female gender, our typical audience member may be someone who listens to many different types of music, as not everyone who watches a horror film listens to really scary music or dresses in all black clothes. For our film, we chose to stick to certain stereotypes like the traditional blonde girl in lightly coloured clothes who makes silly choices, in order to reach out to an audience who like stereotypes. Our typical audience member is the average female who likes a wide choice of films, who would like to go shopping, see her friends, go out and watch films with her boyfriend and or friends.
- For the male gender, our audience member may be someone who feels quite masculine as he does not find a horror film scary. The audience member would probably listen to many different types of music, like the female audience member and listen to a variety of different music. Our typical male audience member may like to earn money, go to work, see his friends and probably go out drinking due to being a teenager. Both our male and female audience member, would probably be either still in school, in their last years at school or at college or work, meaning that they have their Independence and are generally quite separate from their family members.
- If we were to go for the stereotypical audience member for horror films, they would probably fit the stereo class of goth/emo due to their music and clothing choice. The clothes they would wear would probably be black, as it symbolises death and evil which would probably be vans etc, and they would probably wear heavy makeup (eyeliner, white foundation), and have very black hair. The view people have of a stereotypical goth/emo is that they listen to heavy metal/screamo music, as this kind of music is very scary, which fits in with the scariness of a horror film. The kind of horror films they would watch would include the Saw sequel, Halloween, The Ring etc. As these are all very gory, frightening horror films. The image below is of our typical audience member, should we aim for the stereotypical view.
